About Us
The story of The Barnstable began in 1833 when a group of Cape Codders, intent on protecting their community, pooled resources and created the Barnstable County Mutual Fire Insurance Company. Their foresight, based on an understanding of the territory and its people, plus sound underwriting principles, led to the availability of unquestionably fair, reliable and sustainable fire insurance.
The Company has evolved over the years, especially during the last seven decades, and in 1994, the word “Fire” was removed from the name. This change underscores that the Company offers far more than just fire insurance. In fact, today, exclusively through carefully selected independent agents on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the SouthCoast of Massachusetts, The Barnstable sells homeowners, renters, condominium owners, rental property and personal umbrella liability insurance. Its continued A.M. Best rating of A (Excellent) reflects the Company’s strong financial position.
A Mutual Insurance Company, The Barnstable is owned by its policyholders. The elected representatives of the policyholders are the directors, who play a significant role in the affairs of the Company. They serve as trustees for the other policyholders and as the Company’s representatives in their communities. The directors also vote on and select company management.
The overarching goal of The Barnstable is to provide a sustainable, high-quality property insurance market on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and the SouthCoast. Simply put, our objective is to be financially and operationally prepared at all times.
